Larry Hymel was an award-winning of the Hammond Daily Star before becoming Southeastern’s first full-time sports information director in 1966. His football programs won five All-America awards from the NAIA and three times he won a CoSIDA award for the best media guide in the district in various categories. He received the coveted Mac Russo Award from the LSWA in 1994 for his contributions to the progress and ideals of the association. Upon retiring as SID, Hymel became director of SLU’s University Center, guiding it for 11 years during which the facility played host to several Sweet 16 Girls State Tournaments. Upon full retirement he began a third career working for the university’s alumni association. He also helped oversee the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame activities. Hymel has also served on the Hammond Recreation Commission and was the president and organizer of several summer baseball leagues.
