Planas was an award-winning sportswriter at the Morning Advocate and Catholic Commentator in Baton Rouge. He was a full-time sportswriter with the Morning Advocate from 1959 until 1991, later serving as a correspondent for both The Advocate and the New Orleans Times-Picayune. He was an editor and sportswriter at the Commentator from 1961 until his death in the fall of 1996.

Following his graduation from LSU in 1956, Planas joined the Opelousas Daily World as sports editor before moving to the Beaumont (Texas) Enterprise later that same year. He served in the Army from 1957 to 1959, writing sports for the Fort Leonard Wood (Missouri) News during that time.

Planas won numerous writing awards for both the Advocate and the Commentator, including the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Columnist of the Year honor in 1992. During his tenure at the Advocate, he was instrumental in the paper’s coverage of LSU and Southern as well as helping the newspaper’s sports section become recognized statewide for its comprehensive high school coverage.

He wrote or co-wrote three books: “Where Heroes Play,” “History of LSU Basketball” and “LSU Basketball — The Great Coaches, Great Games, Great Players.”

Planas, who received the Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism from the LSWA in 1996, was inducted into the LSU Manship School of Journalism’s Hall of Fame in 1997.

He was also a tireless community volunteer. In May of 1996, he received the J.C. Penney National Golden Rule Award for his volunteer service and was also honored that year by the St. Vincent de Paul Society for his long-time service to the homeless and needy of the Baton Rouge area.

Planas was also a former instructor in English at LSU and former instructor of English and Journalism at Southern University.
