Connie Kaplan published and edited the Kaplan Herald in his hometown and was an avid sportsman as a journalist, broadcasting and writing, and also as a participant. He coached American Legion baseball, officiated high school football for 11 seasons, and served 31 years as a high school basketball official.
He began the Herald in 1965 and maintained weekly publication for the next 27 years, editing the paper. He was extremely active in civic affairs and served as a school board member for 12 years. A scholarship fund in his name for a Vermilion Parish journalism student at LSU was established.
A 1953 LSU graduate, Kaplan became involved in two family businesses, the LIbery Rice Mill and Pelican Oil Company, after his discharge from the U.S. Army. He began writing for several newspapers and broadcasting high school football and basketball games for KSIG Radio in Crowley before starting the Herald newspaper.
He was a charter member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame selection committee. He was the 1992 recipient, posthumously, of the Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism.
