A native of Chelsea, MA, McIntyre was serving in the U.S. Air Force when he arrived in Northwest Louisiana. He answered the call for a cartoonist at the Shreveport Times in 1951 but soon found himself writing sports, a job he held until his retirement in 1993. He eventually worked his way up to sports editor, a position he held more than10 years. A two-finger, hunt and peck typist, he covered a variety of sports including LSU and New Orleans Saints football, Centenary College basketball, minor league baseball, boxing and, later in his career, Grambling State football and thoroughbred racing at Louisiana Downs. Possessed of an affable personality, he was well-liked by peers and the sports figures he covered. He wrote books on Grambling football and Texas League baseball. He was for many years the lead sports columnist at the paper and won the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 1991, His stories and columns were consistent winners in the LSWA’s writing contests. He died suddenly in 1995 at age 65.
